This workshop gives you the opportunity to build your own functional router using open-source technology, helping you understand what goes on inside the device that powers your internet. By building it yourself, you will gain practical skills, learn how to customize your network, and experience the satisfaction of creating a real, working networking device with your own hands.
Who should attend this workshop?
- Students interested in electronics, networking, or open-source technologies
- Hobbyists who enjoy DIY and hands-on technical projects
- Beginners who want to understand how routers and networks work
- Developers and enthusiasts curious about open-source networking tools
Hands-On Learning
- Participants will observe and take part in setting up a working DIY router step by step. The session includes live demonstrations and guided activities to help attendees understand how a router is configured and used in real-world scenarios.
What should you already know to learn and benefit?

- If you have a raspberry pi 4B and SD card, card reader, Micro HDMI cable (for hands on),if not then you can do the software part in the workshop
What will be the setup at the workshop?
- The workshop will feature a live demonstration of building and configuring a DIY router using open-source tools. Participants will be provided with detailed training materials, source code, and ready-to-use router images to help them understand each step of the process. A pre-configured setup will be used to demonstrate flashing, configuration, and testing of the router, allowing participants to follow along and later recreate the setup on their own hardware.
What will you be able to do after attending this workshop?
- Build your own fully functional router from scratch using open-source tools.
- Flash and run router firmware on your own hardware, including popular development boards and RISC-V-based boards.
- Understand what happens inside a router and how it manages network connections.
- Customize and control your own network setup instead of relying on default factory settings.
- Confidently recreate the complete DIY router setup on your own boards after the workshop.
